Academic regulations and recognition of prior learning

Academic regulations set out the rules governing academic study for students and learners registered on »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â (»ÆÉ«²Ö¿â) taught academic awards. They outline how students can proceed through their programme (course) to achieve their award and how applicants and students can apply to have prior learning recognised.

Academic Quality Services (AQS) are responsible for the development and maintenance of the academic regulations and guide to the recognition of prior learning.

For further information, please contact Academic Quality Services at aqs@dmu.ac.uk.

  1. Academic regulations

Academic regulations are divided into the following:

The university ordinances set out the degrees and other academic awards which can be awarded by the university.

Information about the academic credit framework in England and the framework within which the university’s qualifications sit can be found in the document published by the Office for Students.

  2. Programme specific regulations

Some programmes have additional requirements called programme-specific regulations. These are normally in place to address the specific requirements of a Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB). These are articulated in the following:

  3. Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process which facilitates the recognition of an applicant’s or student’s prior learning, either certificated or experiential, to grant them an exemption from studying one or more modules on their programme.

Guidance and an application form can be found below:

    Midlands Credit Compass

Students wishing to transfer to or from universities which are members of the Midlands Credit Compass should make their application as outlined on the web page. For applications to »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â please contact admissions@dmu.ac.uk and put ‘Midlands Credit Compass’ in the subject line of your email.

The Midlands Credit Compass universities are: Birmingham City, Coventry, De Montfort, Derby, Lincoln, Nottingham Trent and Wolverhampton.

»ÆÉ«²Ö¿â students wishing to transfer to other institutions

Students who do not achieve their intended award at »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â will be provided with a record of achievement which details the modules (credits) they have passed. This record will include the credit size and level of the modules. Former students wishing to return to »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â to attempt to gain an award should use the RPL process above; please contact the programme leader or faculty Student Advice Centre in the first instance.  Former »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â students seeking entry to another institution to continue their studies should request information from that institution about its student transfer/recognition of prior learning process; exemptions from study may be granted based on the modules already passed at »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â.
