Personal profile

Dr Ali Jwaid is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Programme Leader for the BSc Software Engineering course at »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â, Leicester, UK. He has more than 18 years of combined experience across higher education, software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, electronic engineering, industrial systems and professional training.

His work brings together academic research, curriculum leadership, industrial consultancy and the delivery of technology-focused projects. His areas of expertise include cybersecurity, secure software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things systems, mobile application development, data science, Agile project management, digital transformation and engineering systems.

Before joining »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â, Dr Jwaid taught computing and engineering at Nottingham Trent University and worked in industry as an Engineering Team Supervisor at Misurata Free Zone Company. His industrial experience includes supervising engineering teams, port systems, automation equipment, PLC-based systems, IT networks, security infrastructure and the maintenance of high-value port machinery.

He has also provided professional training, Agile and Scrum coaching, and technical consultancy to telecommunications, industrial and public-sector organisations in the UK, Libya and Nigeria. His consultancy experience includes cybersecurity, ISO/IEC 27001 readiness, data-centre planning, ERP design and testing, information-security management, Agile transformation, telecommunications infrastructure and the development of IT governance policies and performance indicators. Projects

African Agricultural Value-Chain Knowledge Transfer Partnership

Dr Jwaid served as Principal Investigator, Academic Lead and Project Supervisor for an Innovate UK-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership undertaken during 2023–2024, with a total value of approximately £142,000.

The project brought together »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â, the University of Ilorin and Microscale Embedded Limited in Nigeria. It focused on developing an Agricultural Value-Added Chain platform to connect farmers, buyers, service providers and other stakeholders across Nigeria.

Victims’ Code educational applications with Leicestershire Police 2021-2022

Dr Jwaid supervised a collaborative final-year project with Leicestershire Police to develop interactive educational applications that help children and young people understand crime, victims’ rights and the Victims’ Code.

The project involved the development of two age-appropriate applications: one for primary-school children and another for secondary-school pupils. The applications used interactive characters, storylines, games and scenario-based questions to communicate victims’ rights in an accessible and engaging way. Students worked directly with Leicestershire Police and tested the applications with pupils in Leicester schools, using their feedback to improve the designs.

Dr Jwaid provided academic and technical supervision throughout the requirements analysis, application and game design, implementation, stakeholder engagement, testing and evaluation stages.

Consultancy work

Misurata Free Zone Company, Libya — 2025–2026

Dr Jwaid provided strategic and technical consultancy supporting the development of the company’s digital, information-security and telecommunications infrastructure.

His work included data-centre planning, ERP requirements and testing, cybersecurity risk assessment, network security, business continuity, disaster recovery, systems integration, supplier evaluation, 4G base-station and antenna planning, and the development of a phased infrastructure-improvement roadmap.

He also supported the organisation’s preparation for ISO/IEC 27001 by developing an implementation timeline and a technical and financial certification proposal. This work included information-asset identification, risk assessment, security controls, incident management, organisational responsibilities and continual-improvement processes.

In addition, Dr Jwaid contributed to policies and procedures for the Server Management and Information Security Unit and developed IT key performance indicators covering system availability, security performance, incident response, project delivery, reliability and user support. He also provided Agile and Scrum coaching to support iterative delivery, backlog management, sprint planning and continuous improvement.

Libyan Iron and Steel Company — 2023

Dr Jwaid provided consultancy in project and programme management, Agile delivery, Scrum, ERP planning, cybersecurity governance and digital transformation.

The work focused on strengthening project delivery, improving coordination between technical and business teams, supporting risk and stakeholder management, and introducing structured Agile practices for technology and organisational-change initiatives.

Libyana Telecommunications Company — January–February 2025

Dr Jwaid designed and delivered professional training for telecommunications and IT specialists in cybersecurity, CISSP-aligned preparation, PMI-ACP preparation, Agile project management, Scrum, risk governance and secure network management.

The programme combined theoretical knowledge, practical activities and certification-oriented preparation to strengthen participants’ cybersecurity and project-delivery capabilities.

The Libyan Academy for Communications and Informatics — August 2025

Dr Jwaid delivered cybersecurity training in collaboration with the Academy as part of candidates’ preparation for EC-Council certification.

Participants included professionals from Hatif Libya and Misurata Free Zone Company. The programme covered threat identification, network security, risk assessment, security controls, incident response and practical certification preparation.

Dr Ali Jwaid supervised a collaborative project between »ÆÉ«²Ö¿â students and Leicestershire Police to design educational digital applications that help children and young people understand crime, victims’ rights and the Victims’ Code.

The students worked directly with Leicestershire Police and received feedback from local schools. Two separate applications were developed: one aimed at primary-school children up to the age of 11 and another for secondary-school pupils up to the age of 17. The applications used interactive characters, storylines, games and scenario-based questions to explain victims’ rights in an accessible and age-appropriate way. (»ÆÉ«²Ö¿â)

The project’s main objective was to make information about crime and the twelve rights contained in the Victims’ Code easier for children to understand. One application used a map-guided storyline in which children progressed by learning about a victim’s right and answering a related question before moving to the next stage. The applications were tested with pupils in Leicester schools, allowing the students to gather user feedback and improve their designs. (»ÆÉ«²Ö¿â)

Dr Jwaid guided the students through stakeholder engagement, requirements analysis, application and game design, implementation, testing and evaluation. The project demonstrated how mobile applications and serious games can translate complex public-service information into engaging educational experiences with potential for wider use across the UK.

Digital Support for Addiction Recovery and Healthier Lifestyles

Dr Jwaid’s role includes leading and supervising the technical development of the mobile application, translating community and stakeholder requirements into functional features, and supporting the design of an accessible, secure and user-centred digital solution. The application is intended to provide practical guidance, recovery resources, wellbeing support, progress-tracking functions and signposting to relevant services.

Case studies

 Agricultural technology and knowledge transfer in Nigeria

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership supported the development of a national agricultural value-chain platform intended to connect farmers, buyers and service providers. The project transferred expertise in cybersecurity, machine learning, data analytics and Agile software development to the business partner while supporting its plans to expand research and development activities and create new skilled employment.

Cybersecurity capacity building in Libya

Professional training delivered through Libyana Telecommunications and the Libyan Academy for Communications and Informatics strengthened participants’ knowledge of cyber risk, network defence, security governance and internationally recognised certification frameworks.

Data-centre and security transformation

Consultancy for Misurata Free Zone Company supported the organisation’s planning for secure data-centre infrastructure, ERP implementation, telecommunications capability and ISO/IEC 27001 readiness.

Digital health and IBD research

Dr Jwaid’s published research explored the use of smartphones, artificial intelligence and machine learning to support the treatment and outpatient management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The work highlighted opportunities for symptom and lifestyle monitoring, improved patient–clinician communication, personalised support and intelligent clinical decision tools.

Internet of Medical Things security

Dr Jwaid’s IoMT research focuses on the cybersecurity of connected healthcare technologies, including vulnerability identification, malware analysis, secure communication, zero-trust access and the protection of medical devices and sensitive patient data.

Accessible smart-home and assistive embedded systems

Dr Jwaid’s research has contributed to the development of affordable and user-friendly embedded systems for independent living. This includes a low-cost, scalable smart-home prototype integrating Arduino, sensors, actuators and a mobile interface, as well as a smart glove that uses ultrasonic sensing and vibration feedback to support indoor mobility for people with visual impairments.

Renewable energy modelling and low-carbon research

Dr Jwaid’s renewable-energy research includes mathematical modelling, simulation and performance prediction for solar photovoltaic modules and wind-energy systems. His publications cover solar PV parameter estimation, wind-turbine power-curve modelling, wind-resource assessment, global solar-radiation prediction and statistical methods for estimating wind-energy potential. This work supports more accurate renewable-energy planning, system design and forecasting, contributing to improved energy efficiency and the transition towards lower-carbon energy systems.
